Fender Tag Decoding For 1964 & 1965 Models:

There are five main areas to decode on a fender tag: the SO, NUMBER, BDY, TRM, and PNT.

SO and NUMBER go together as the Shipping Order number. It consists of a 4 digit planned delivery month/day code, then a plant production sequence number.

The date is decoded as follows...
JAN...1,FEB...2,MAR...3,APR...4,MAY...5,JUN...6,JULY...7,AUG...8,SEPT...9,OCT...A,NOV...B, DEC...C.

For example: June 23rd looks like this...623. October 3rd looks like this...A03.

Next is the BDY or body number indicating the model & body style.

Want to know if it's a Formula S? On the fender tag of a 65 Barracuda, look for the 'ABC'.... under the AB will be a '31' for the 273 4bbl 235hp engine. Under the C will be a '2' for the formula "S" package. The car should also have a tach in the dash....

Fender Tag Decoding For 1966 Models:

On a 1966 fender tag there are 3 rows of letters, top row is the lowercase alphabet, middle row is the uppercase alphabet, and the bottom row is the SO Number, BDY, TRM, & PAINT codes. Under some of the letters in the top & middle rows will be numbers, and under the bottom row of letters will be a mixture of numbers & letters. I will list them as follows: top row on the left is small “a” and a number under it.....I will refer to it this way....a6, b4...and so on. If your tag has the numbers listed under the appropriate letters, your car should have that item.

If no numbers are there, then you should not have that option or item. There will be exceptions, for instance the 1966 Barracuda has fender mounted turn signals but do not have the fender tag option code because they are not an option for this car. They are standard.

This list is for most 1966 Models and is incomplete but should help you decode your fender tag.

Let’s start from the top row and work down

Lowercase Alphabet Codes

.a 6 = Console
b 4 = Bucket Seats
b 5 = Rear armrests/ ashtrays
f 6 = Rear seat speaker
g 6 = Bumper revel molding
h 7 = Fender Mounted turn signals
m 3 = Door upper frame & quarter molding
n 9 = Lower body molding
p 6 = LH remote outside mirror
u 1 = Sold car (special order)

Uppercase Alphabet Codes

AB 11 = 170 cid /6
AB 21 = 225 cid /6
AB 31 = 273 cid V8 2bbl
AB 32 = 273 cid V8 4bbl
AB 41 = 318 cid V8 2bbl
AB 51 = 361 cid ?
AB 62 = 383 cid V8 4bbl
AB 81 = 440 cid V8 4bbl
AB 73 = 426 cid Hemi V8
C 1 = 3 speed manual transmission
C 3 = 4 speed manual transmission
C 5 = Automatic transmission
D 9 = Front Disk brakes
E 1 = Air Cleaner Package
F 1 = Basic Accessory group package?
F 7 = Formula S
G 1 = 26“ Radiator OR New Yorker basic accessory group ( am radio, rear seat speaker, left remote mirror, power windows)

Y 6 = ?
Z 8 = Buffed exterior (silver AA1 only)

Bottom Row

"SO NUMBER”, or Shipping Order Number, is the birthday of the car and shipping order number (all numbers are together) all we are really concerned about are the first 3 digits. The first 3 are the Birthday of the car, A = October, B = November, C = December, if there is a number for the first digit, than that is the month, 1 = January, 2 = February, etc..... The other 5 mean nothing as far as the car is concerned. So A11 would be October 11th, and 502 would be May 2nd.

“BDY” is the body style or model of the car

“PAINT” This section will be divided into 3 parts, the first part is “PAI” which is the exterior color of the car. The second part is “N”, which tell us if the car came with a stripe above the side glass on the roof or not, and the 3rd part is “T”, which tells us the color of the upper door frame paint on the inside of the front doors.

The letters & numbers under the “PAI” will be as follows:
AA1 = Silver Metallic
BB1 = Black
CC1 = Light Blue
DD1 = Light Blue Metallic
EE1 = Dark Blue Metallic
GG1 = Dark Green Metallic
KK1 = Light Turquoise Metallic
LL1 = Dark Turquoise Metallic
MM1 = Turbine Bronze Metallic (available after mid-year 66)
PP1 = Bright Red
QQ1 = Dark Red Metallic
RR1 = Yellow
SS1 = Soft Yellow (cream)
WW1 = White
XX1 = Beige
YY1 = Bronze Metallic
ZZ1= Citron Gold Metallic
661 = Light Mauve Metallic

Under the “N” for the stripe on the roof will be:
B = black
W = white
H = red
Q = red
E = blue
8 or blank = no stripe
(I have seen tags with nothing under the letter “N” but the car has the stripe. Remember, dealerships may have added the stripes after the car arrived at the dealership).

Under the “T” for the upper inner door paint will be: (usually this is the color of the outside or the interior)
B = black
C = light blue
D = medium blue
E = dark blue
P = red
Q = dark red
W = white
Y = medium gold
Z = gold
